Lethrinops microstoma can be found in reasonable shallow water in entire Lake Malawi. They are living above the sandy bottoms of the intermediate zones from rocks to sand. In trade this species is also called Lethrinops sp."blackfin". These examples are offspring from wild caught fish which were caught somewhere along the Tanzanian coast, unfortunately I donīt know the exact location. This species can be found over there on several locations among others near Ikombe, Nkanda, Lupingu, Manda, Pombo Rocks and Undu Point. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 15 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 17 cm, females grow to about 13 cm. Lethrinops microstoma is searching the sand for food and lives mainly of the invertebrates they find in the sand after jigging this. You can best keep this species with multiple females in a large tank with a lot of swimming space. It`s a quiet, peaceful cichlid which can be hold best with other quiet species from equal environments. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
